That's beautiful, Steve. Thought about making a whole box from end grain?

Awesome job. The "patchwork" effect is visually stunning.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

The finish on the box was black aniline dye and a number of thinned coats of oil based poly. On the top I used several coats of Teak Oil and several coats of the thinned poly.

The Teak Oil is made by Watco and is very similar to their Danish Oil. I like it as it is a little darker than the Danish Oil and seems to make to figure pop more. Its application is the same as the Danish. One warning, using an oil on an all end grain surface takes patience. The oil will ooze out of the pores for up to 12 hours. I had to wipe down the surfaces every half hour. After the last coat, I waited a week before applying any poly.

I thinned the poly around 20%. I wanted a high gloss finish that still showed the grain structures of the different woods. LOML often teases me about my ability to make a lovely piece of wood look like plastic.

I would guess that the box took around 8 hours to complete. This was spread over a long period of time, with all the different gluings and the finishing.

The top started out as 24" long strips of varying widths. I ran them through the planer to make them equal thickness. Then, I glued them together in a contrasting pattern. These strips were then cut into 4 equal lengths. These were rotated and flipped to make a more random pattern and glued again. Next, I cut slices, close to the thickness of the lid, off the glued up block. These strips were, again, flipped and rotated and glued as the final top. Whew!

I really like the looks of that. Maybe one day I'll try my hand at one of those.
