    Ebony bandsawn box

    Hi

thought I'd share an image of a recently completed single drawer bandsawn box.

The client purchased the Ebony block from Ebay. This is the first time I've worked with Ebony, whilst the finish is attractive, I'd much rather work with Australian Red Cedar. It took me about 90 minutes to clean up the bandsaw!

The bottom line is the client is very happy with the results,

Very nice work. Did you keep the piece solid or is the top resawn/reglued so you could clean out space for the drawer?

That's really lovely. Great piece of wood, and a really pleasing design.

I have a couple of questions, if you're willing...

The edges look very lightly relieved. What method did you use?

Can you describe how you finished it, and how the ebony took the finish?

~ Background was blue, I normally use white so that may explain the unusual effect on the edges?

~ It is finished up to 1000 wet n dry, the client who purchased the block and had some input into the design will continue with the finishing up to 2000 wet n dry. Oil used was Tung Oil which includes my own mix of other oils.

Normally to make a bandsawn box it is necessary to bandsaw a section from one side of the block, this will become the back of the box when re-glued.

This process enables access to the block to bandsaw the drawer section.

Many thanks to everyone for their kind words.

This is the first occasion I've worked with Ebony. It is brittle to work with, cracks, although good to carve. Took an hour to clean up the bandsaw, it is like having a bucket of coal dust thrown about the workshop!

                        Tony,

When I grow up, I want to make stuff just like you.

                        Really, great stuff.

How hard was the ebony on the blade?

Well, the end-result was well worth spending a blade.
