What I did over the holidays

...instead of working on the loft rail and ladder project that I should have been working on.

Turned a couple of bowls, and used a gloss wiping poly finish, for the first time on a turning project. I think these are pretty much at the limit of the "plastic-y" look. Not that there's anything wrong with that....

Maple Bowl -- face glued two pieces of 8/4 maple, about 8" diameter:

Cherry Bowl -- from a large slab that I roughed for a friend on my bandsaw -- got to keep a few pieces, about 4.5" diameter:

I played around with the grind on my bowl gouge while doing these, and learned a few "do not do's" along the way.

    Regards,
    Tom

They look great. I've used wipe on polly and like the look but lately I've been using oil and bee's wax ala Richard Raffan. It's much easier and I like the look on some woods but on others I prefer other finishes.
About those "do not do's", I've pretty much got those covered but if you find any "do do's" be sure to pass them on, I need all the help I can get

The subtle design on the Maple bowl is nice. The grain patterns on the Cherry make it a real eye pleaser.

Real nice, Tom. Nice thin walls on both. The Cherry is especially eye-catching.

                            Nice work.

I find the Cherry one especially pleasing all the way around.

                            Looks great.
