    end table

Quarter sawn oak, an arts & crafts style but more about the wine box labels

I made the legs with two layers of 4/4 and veneered the sides to hide the layers. I cut my own veneers with my 10" Craftsman band saw (newer Rikon style) and then sanded them to finish thickness on my Ridgid sander using the oscillating belt and a jig that acts like a pressure plate (makes a mini drum sander). Got the veneers down to an even 3/64". Used the same setup to make the 1/4" thick slats for the tray. Some friends asked me to make this for them so it is actually my first commission. Now I can buy some better blades for the band saw.

I've been hanging out here for a while now (Since I bought my BT3100 two+ years ago) and besides sending me off to too many bargains, you have all taught me quite a bit - Thanks!

Beautiful work! Were the wine labels taken from a wooden crate or decoupaged onto a substrate?

You really popped the quartersawn grain on that piece. Great job.

                      Thanks all,

The wine labels are the fronts of wooden wine crates. They had some shipping and handling scars which I left in. They are set in the oak frames floating with a tongue and groove, like a panel. The finish is minwax chestnut stain and 4 coats of satin poly. Because of all the tight spots and areas where drips could get started, I protected all of my tennons then stained and put on the poly before the glue up for the stand. The top was all assembled prior to staining. It is attached to the stand with metal S clips.

I'll post a picture of the jig as soon as I can. It's pretty simple but as soon as I strarted to describe it I knew I needed a picture. My wife and I are going out of town to vistit grandchildren so it may be a week or so.
