Well my last piece of furniture for 2006 anyway. I decided I would like to make my mother in law a nice quilt display rack for Christmas this year. She is really into quilting so I thought this would do well for her. I searched the internet looking at different quilt racks in an attempt to get inspiration for my design. I eventually settled on a design by David Marks as I liked its simple look and clean lines. In the end I redesigned the bottom leg section and re-dimensioned the piece based on what I though would work well for me.
Here is a link to David’s piece.

Like David I also used Cherry for my piece. Mine is 36” tall by 24-1/2” wide with the bottom of the legs being 15” apart. The joinery for all the rails is Mortise and Tenon.
I decided to go with a heart for my inlay and used appropriately enough Redheart for the wood. The picture does not show it but it is a very nicely figured little piece that is deep red in color. I also thought that this would be nice as the piece ages and becomes more reddish.
I very carefully chose the boards that I was to used for this project and the figure of these boards show up better in this photo. Also notice the shaping of the legs where they appear to look like an upside down heart shape. I made this design change as I liked the way it flowed from the bottom to the top and it also seemed to highlighted the heart inlay.
Unlike David however I was unable to complete this piece is 25 minutes! I was really starting to worry that I was not going to make it for Christmas but fortunately I just made it under the wire and the last coat of finish went on last night and this was a good this as I was really concerned and if I had made any mistakes I would not have finish it on time. So with that I think I got pretty lucky.
