    Domino Holders

    Small simple project for my Grandmother and her girlfriends who recently started playing Dominos together. These are Maple and Mahogony with a Danish Oil finish.

    As suspected routing the profile burnt like crazy on the maple end grain on a test piece. A few searches at trusty BTCentral and a few changes and I didn't get one burn mark on any of the pieces.

    Very nicely done, Eric - love the contrasts! I'll bet that they'll see a great deal of use. Did you put any material on the bases (baise, or similar), or are they left natural?

      That's wild, LOML came to me a couple of weeks ago with a picture of domino holders and told me she wanted a set!
      Your's look great! Other than the maple, what type of woods did use?

          That's a project that will "grow legs". Pretty soon, you'll have requests for more.

          Well done!

              Great job. Are those dominos from a train set? Thats a fun game.

                  Nice job Eric! What were the changes that you implemented?

                  Thanks,

                    Thanks for the comments guys.

                    I didn't but any baise, etc on the wood. They are left natural with WATCO Danish oil.

                    Larry, Funny thing is my dad saw an add for these. Made of plastic off-white. Very ugly. $7.50 plus shipping. I made these with Mahogny and Maple 1x8x2' (finished size is 9x4 3/4). and have $20.00 into them. Cheaper then the plastic set. I used a wider board to allow the grain to match up through the strips. Another idea I thought of after the fact is to use a wider board and run the grain in the opposite direction to put the wood strips verticle. Then with a plug cutter you can make the boards look like dominos (just don't put any where the groove would be).

                    They are from a double 12 set. We play alot of Mexican War Train, Grandma likes Chickenfoot, which is similiar.

                    One thing I noticed is that not all the tiles are ground to an identical thickness. There are about 6 pieces in my 91 piece set that are snug.

                    The longest part of the project was getting the groove at the right thickness, depth, and angle (20degrees)

                    Routing changes. First I used the hand held router is figured on it burning. Then I dropped the router in the table and used the fence with the roman ogee aligned ont he bearing. Reduced the cut depth. Increased the feed rate (much faster then I usually run). I was going to use the entire bit, but on the real peices after the first pass at 1/8" I liked the looked and stopped there.

                        Very beautifully done and nice present to grandma.

                        And when the girlfriends will come to play, they will say;
                        Oh may God, so beautiful, how much did you pay for them?
                        It's a present from my grandson, will answer the proud grandma...

                        And if you are not lucky (or lucky), they will say;
                        Can he make them for me...I will pay him...

                        Thanks for sharing
