    Rough pine box

Opening the Christmas gift derby for 2007, I present a rough pine box, destined for my nephew's tree.

The idea is that the low-quality materials and construction are supposed to contrast with the contents.

The deadblow hammer is from a Wood Mag design. The marking knife from ShopNotes. Everything is made entirely of shop scraps, with the exception of the blade, which I bought from www.japanwoodworker.com and the copper ferules from HD. The finish on the tools is wipe on satin poly, on the box it's spray shellac.

I'm still wrestling with final treatments on the box. I have some faux felt stuff I've never used, or I might just spray another coat or two of shellac after final sanding. LOML has designed a cool logo for the box cover, but i don't know how to implement it. I have a couple of weeks until my nephew's mom (my sis) comes to visit. I'll stuff it in her luggage at that time, no matter it's final state!

I doubt your nephew will truly appreciate the work involved or the quality achieved ...May I suggest an alternate final destination?

Actually, I think he'll get it just fine.

He's been doing home fixer-uppers this year, so he's been really getting into finish work. Plus, he and his dad own six hobby stores, so he's always built models and other small craft work.

He had a sort of hang-dog look when he saw I'd built one for my brother, so I tried to put together a little extra sumphin' with the marking knife and boxed assembly.

                      Sorry to disappoint you, Don!

ps I don't know about the "quality achieved" bit, but the "work involved" is very interesting. There's not a lot of complexity to the designs, but the joinery on tools like these is the most demanding I've done. I'm really let down if it's not absolutely perfect.

That is pretty cool. What a great gift for several reasons.

I'm sure it will be very well recieved.

                        Nice work.

You had me a little worried talking about a pine box. LOL

Only negative about it, not more tools in it, LOL.
A lot of the old toolboxes that I see are pine, works great.
