    His & Hers Desks

This pair of simple desks came about when me and LOML were unable to find suitable commercial alternatives of acceptable quality and price. They are intended to be primarily used as computer/laptop tables, and for LOML to do her school homework. When I get around to it, I'll build a pair of freestanding drawer units that will slot in underneath the desks. The plan is to make the furniture modular so that it can be re-arranged or moved into other rooms as our needs change.

I have another small section of the Beech butcherblock that I plan to use on top of a tall & deep bookcase type storage unit. Our printer will sit on top and the shelves will be used to store all of the software boxes & 'junk' that seems to accumulate around the computers.

The legs and rails are made of poplar and the panels are 1/4" MDF. The beech butcherblock came from Ikea. The quality of the butcherblock left quite a lot to be desired - there were some deep scratches and some blocks raised up about 1/16". Fortunately it sanded out easily in a few minutes with the ROS, progressing through the grits from 80 grit to 320 grit. The tops were finished with Watco Natural danish oil to bring out the warmth of the beech, followed by several coats of water-based satin poly. The bases are painted with a plain white satin latex enamel interior house paint.

The desks have identical dimensions (49 5/8" W x 25 5/8" D x 29" H) although it doesn't look like it in the skewed perspective of the pic - the room is too small to get to more straight-on shot. And apologies for the dust on the lens.

Very nice work indeed. Tops are a great compliment to the hardwood floor.
What method did you use to attach the horizontal poplar rails to the legs?

Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

Thank you all for your kind words. LOML seemed suitably impressed which is all that really matters

The legs and rails are joined with tenon & mortise joints, with the dadoes for the panels. The only mechanical fastners used are the metal 'L' brackets (supplied with the butcherblock) used to attach the top to the base.

Very nice! Only thing I notice is the guy's desk is not messy; you need to fix that real quick. A guy's desk needs to be very messy.

I like'um! The color and tops compliment each other very well. You did a good job and impressed your wife; it doesn't get much better than that!
