    New computer speakers and desk

Well, I just finished a pair of speakers for my computer this weekend. My first time working with veneer, other than edge banding. The speakers are a kit (with cabinet design) from GR Research. The only change I made was to move the port from the rear to the top. The veneer is cherry. Paper backed veneer done with contact cement over MDF. Finished with Tried adn True original wood finish (linseed oil and beeswax)

The desk was built in early July based on a design from Woodworker's Journal a few years ago. I will take more pictures of it eventually (sorry, can't see much in these, the rest of it is pretty cluttered right now). I still need to make a small end unit, and a small storage hutch.

Do you have a link to the kit?

I'd like to use them to turn an old pc into a shop stereo (ripped almost all my songs to pc).

          Thanks

Nice work indeed. I wish I still had the time for projects like this. I barely have time to get the stuff that needs doin' done.

The company that makes the kit is GR Research. www.gr-research.com

I was very happy with their support (I had a few questions during construction). The owner and designer answers the questions himself. The kit I built is the A/V-1, which is their smallers speaker.

I just had to make time for this one. Not a particularly time consuming project. I was getting a little tired of only doing projects for the house. Of course, it helps that my wife is a musician and has some computer projects that decent speakers on the computer will help with, plus it gives me decent speakers on the computer for when I finish getting the recording gear so I can make a CD or two of her.

                  Thanks for the compliment everyone.

So far, they sound very good to me. I'm still breaking them in, takes a good 50-100 hours of play time.

Because of the small woofer, there is not tons of bass, it falls off pretty fast below 55 or 60 Hz. But above that, it's a very smooth, natural sounding speaker. Imaging on them is great, at least seated at the desk. Probably not so good across the room. I think that I'm starting to favor their overall sound over the Boston Acoustics towers that I have on my main system in the basement. And I also think that in the future I'll be building another kit from this company.
