And they shall go forth two by two

Sorry for the scripture pun but it seemed approriate. I just finished 6 bandsaw boxes (2 each design) and thought I'd share my experiences. They will be given away as table prizes at my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary over Labor Day.

They are made from Walnut and Soft Maple and coated with 3 coats of sprayed (some had been brushed first) Zinnser Seal Coat.

    Airborne

    Minnow

    Boa

    What I learned:
    • I suck at brushing Shellac
    • Shellac eats foam brushes
    • I bought a HF 43430 HVLP gun and it sprays Shellac wonderfully
    • How to get a new tool. Honey it will go faster if I had a spindle sander; result was I got a Ridgid Edge Belt/Spindle Sander
    • Don't make your boxes deeper than the spindle height- oops, cost me extra time
    • Never use maple for these boxes.
    • Don't let Shellac get too hot sanding it with a ROS.
    • I'm giving them away and not to sweat the small imperfections.
    • 3M Spray adhesive works great for glueing the pattern to the box and sands off easily.
    • There really ought to be called sanding boxes
    • Many people want me to build them some and are willing to pay real money for them.

They look great. Everyone who gets one will be thrilled.

BTW - I wouldn't even consider doing them without an OSS. What a chore!

          They look great.

I think I spotted an edge that wasn't sanded on one of them. Best to ship them to me for a closer inspection!

I promise to get them back in time for the anniversary party...(75th!)

Yep, nice work. These would be horrible without a spindle sander, I agree, you did a fine job. I really like making them, personally.

And lastly, does everyone have the same bandsaw box book??

While my favorites the last set (compare/contrast curly wood verses straight grain), I wouldn't be in to big of a hurry to try a wood box, let alone two (some sort of pact?), LOL.
