    Pennsylvania Spice box finished *PIC*

From the plans by Glen Huey, an 18th century spice box. Popular Woodworking 'Great American furniture' July 2003. Primary wood is Willow secondary is 1/4 sawn aspen, the top of the box is Diamond Willow. Hardware is from Horton Brasses Inc. A big learning curve for me as I spent much time learned many new techniques and jigs, I made a few mistakes that requiring a complete start over of a few pieces.
As each complete part was completed and fitted it was finished with two coats of Danish Oil as it may be months before I returned to it. The final finish is four coats of Wipe On Poly, inside and out.

    Brian,
That is beautiful work, a piece in which you can take justifiable pride.

That is a really great heirloom piece, with several notable features. The raised panel end grain has been carefully worked so as not to appear darker than the rest, which can be very difficult. The miters and the plinth details are pin sharp. The grain follows across adjacent drawer fronts and add to the look of the inside. The lock is beautifully recessed into the door and the knobs are perfectly aligned. Half pins on the drawer dovetails are spot-on equal and the finish is great too.

A very impressive piece, Brian - well done!

        Ray.

Brian - WELCOME TO THE FORUM

I can appreciate the amount of work and craftsmanship that went into this project. The dovetails really tie in with the quality of the rest of the cabinet. Multi-drawer cabinets are especially appealing when done with finesse and planning like you did here. I also like the way the hinges are door-edge mounted. I'll bet you took one long deep breath when you put the lid on the poly for the last time.

Brian, I went back to the pictures several times trying to think of something to say. No words can do justice to the beauty and craftsmanship that you are showing!

Beautiful work. Pieces like this get fought over by heirs. That pic on my desktop would keep me motivated to keep trying to improve. Keep em coming. Pat

I love the dovetails. Can you say explain what method/jig you used to make them? Also, how is aspen to work with? It looks somewhat like maple from the photos.

Nice job! Good use of contuous grain on the drawer front. Finish looks
flawless! Super good job getting an even reveal on the door.

Wow, I was very impressed BEFORE I got the picture with the door open. When I saw all those dovetails I was REALLY impressed! Very nice work.

Simply beautuful, Brian. I'm sure it is extra special to you and the missus since you cut the Willow yourselves.

Sure got me looking at it after my visit and seeing those drawer details up close. They are on sale right now too.
