    Blanket Chest (Walnut)

I have been lurking around these boards for a while and my favorite section is the finished projects. So I figure I would add my own.

This one has taken me longer than anticipated due to my router dying and the insane heat, but I finally bit the bullet this weekend and put on the finishing touches.

This is the first of the pieces of furniture I have made to replace my beginner pieces that were ummm...crappy.

Here is a picture of the original chest. When I made this chest I had limited skills and tools, it was too big (a design mistake on my part) and the top was not stable. The top actually bowed about a half an inch as the temperature changed. It's funny now, but at the time I was pissed.

    Old Maple Chest

The new chest I am very happy with. Having learned my lesson on the previous chest, I made sure the top would not warpor bow by alternating the top boards, putting in braces and sealing the top the second it was done.

So here is a picture of the chest and a link to other pictures.

Also, if you want to check out my other projects, you can see them here.

Very nicely done!! Took a look at your shop and you've got a real "efficient" setup! It must work judging from the quality of your pieces.

Welcome to the forum. Look forward to hearing more from you.

PS - I thought your first chest was pretty nice looking. Have you tried to "fix" the things you didn't like?

If you think that Maple chest is "crappy", then some of my work is down right embarassing.

        Great looking piece.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

          Thanks!

Yah I am forced into an efficient setup with a one car garage. =) I hope to be moving to a house with a two car garage before the end of the year.

I feel I should elaborate on my old blanket chest and why I thought it was crappy. The picture makes it look pretty nice.

First I made it too tall and too deep, so that wasn't easily fixable. Second it was my first time doing a edge joined top and I decided to use a belt sander on it to even up the edges that were misaligned...I'm sure this didn't help the top when the temperature changed and it would warp.

So I ended up sanding some nifty little valleys in the top. Hehe. I also put the hinges on backwards, so they bent over time and finally...I spilled laundry detergent on the top and the finish turned green.

It was my first project with real wood, so it was a HUGE learning experience, but in the end...I just wanted to burn it.

I ended up giving it to a neighbor who just bought their house and didn't have any furniture.

              WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Great looking cabinet, and wood selection. Nice craftsmanship. BTW thumbs up on the bandsaw, and fence assembly.

I love the patina copper top table you made! It is absolutley gorgeous! For some reason, the link to the DWG seems to be broken... do you happen to have any plans for this puppy?

Sorry about that. The plans link should be working now or you can get it at...

The plans are pretty simple, I didn't even draw out the drawer, but if you have a little Autocad knowledge you can figure out the dimensions.
