    Lathe Stand

Not quite finished, but close enough to show!

Construction is 3/4" Maple/Birch ply on a torsion box base with swivel casters on lifts at both ends. The face frame and door frames are Sycamore, door inserts are 1/8" Maply ply, and the drawer facings are Aspen (ran short of Sycamore). The top is trimmed with Purpleheart. Next is to drill the holes to bolt the lathe down.

Still to do is make the shelves and drill for the shelf pins, and build a chisel rack that will hang on a French cleat inside the right hand door for storage. A second cleat will be on the outside of the door to hang them on when the lathe is being used. I am going to glue up some Purpleheart blanks for Ginger to turn knobs for the doors and drawers. Everything except the knobs will be sprayed with semigloss laquer.

She wants a fold down work shelf on the back that will get added later.

That's a real nice setup Pappy! I just picked up one of those lathes from the Woodcraft dads day special. What you have there is inspiring to me for my lathe. It's also the lathe I hope to get my wife interested in.

Thanks for sharing it. Post more pix when you get the punchlist done!

Beautiful work, as usual. Didn't think you had that much room in the Playpen!

Dang Don, that is real nice! I wish I could get myself to do stuff like that. Once I built the frame for my stand I have never made it back to it! So I have been working with a lathe on an open stand for better than a year. I have serious lack of motivation when it comes to shop cabinets and such. For some reason I just want to work on other things so they come last on a very long list.

                    That looks great, Don.

So, how long before the Pappy's Playpen is usurped by Ginger's Lathe Lounge?

Her area is to be called "Kitten's Korner"!

Thanks for the kind words, gents. Everything was designed on the fly with an idea of what I wanted and some basic measurements (table size and required lathe height). I use shop furniture to try new things. The face frame cross pieces under the drawers are dovetailed. They came out ok but could have been tighter.

Pappy, that is one very nice cabinet. I'm sure Ginger appreciates the thoughtfulness that went into it, as well! I like the idea of the French cleats for hanging the chisels.
