Built-in around the fireplace... almost there

I'm 98%? done with my built-in project.. giving finishing touches and about to start lighting and running some cables (HDMI etc ) for TV. Here are some pics.

Lot of molding work. I regret my purchase of Ryobi 12" miter saw!! I'll be selling it in local craigslist in few days!

I don't have to tell anything about my BT3000.5!! You all know what it can do. The 23 gauge nailer I bought from ebay for $23... great tool! Came very handy when I worked on small moldings.. Worked flawlessly!. Porter Cable Compressor and 3 nailer package -- the best investment after BT3K.

      Very Nice

I really like the finish, did you use a spray on toner before staining?

By the way, the tall cabinets are pre-made from KraftMaid. For everything else, I bough the panels and cut them. So, I don't deserve any praise for finishing etc. There are few items I stained myself to match the rest. Thanks to Rockler for their help!

We designed the complete thing and ordered materials through a company in AZ (buycabinets) to save $$$$. Ornaments are from Rockler.

                    Beautiful

I love it! I'm planning something similar for our old bungalow - a little more "Craftsmanie". Good idea on the cabinets - I may have to steal it.

Cabinets are bookcase and microwave/oven cabinets. We added valance etc to give it a custom furniture look.

For the toe kick we used valance baseboard and ogee molding to give it a custom furniture look.

The drawers are (2 at the bottom on each side) deep enough for CD/DVD racks. The electronics are hidden on the right end side of the cabinets behind the doors. All the electrical hookup are also hidden in there.

Speakers are on the ceiling. I've the wiring but not exposed yet.

Really does look fantastic. Good job. Regardless of how much you bought already put together, looks like a lot of work was involved.

It is a beautiful work. I have one question though.
Is this a real functioning fireplace? Does it get used? I would like to steal some ideas (with your permission) but I am afraid of the heat from the fireplace.
                            Thanks,
                            Alex V

Yes, it is a real (gas) fireplace. The heating was my initial concern. But, it is not an issue in our case because the vent goes sidewards to our side yard. And, I built a plywood (and several 2x6s) box around the fireplace. And, there is almost 15" of gap between the plywood shelf (the finished shelf is on top of this) and the fireplace unit. The unit (inside) itself has alumninum shield.

BTW: I did experiment with the heat, by turning on the fireplace for few hours, before I installed a conduit that runs from TV box to the base cabinet on the right side. The leakage was minimal. so, I went for blue PVC conduit. After I boxed the fireplace, I realized that I should have installed one of those flexible steel conduit with some insulation. I did run the conduit (some of it) behind the wall insulation though. Sure, there were lot of learnings from this project.

The design is open source Please email if you have any questions.
