Do the pictures come down here after a certain amount of time ? I just found this post but was very curious to see how your birdhouse came out. I haven't gotten around to painting mine but I built that same house. Not quite done with it but pretty close:
Fun stuff but a lot of work. This was before I had my bandsaw so those small parts were a hassle and not very well fitting.

Well, went to the site, and you have some nice things there. Cool birdhouse. I like the flip top tool thingy. How's the finish holding up on the planter?

That came out great Paul. Thanks for sharing the pictures. It's always fun to see what someone else comes up with from the same plans that I had used.
I want to get out a few more birdhouses before Spring but I can tell ya, they won't all be like this one ! haha
John -- copper isn't that hard really. Took a little searching but I found it at Hobby Lobby. I'm sure you can buy it online as well. This was 0.005" thickness I believe. Comes in a roll about a foot wide. I used a paper cutter to cut it into the strips to match the template this magazine article provided. From there you cut little notches about halfway through in maybe 5 places. You flip every other row upside down so the notches don't align. You overlap the rows as you attach them to the roof and voila, you have a good looking shingle look.
My first time with copper too -- we'll see how it looks after it ages some. I used it to protect the roof of my pavillion type feeder too. But nothing nearly as fancy:
