    Birdhouse Party

I made 8 of these birdhouses, 4 for a party for my 3 1/2 yo and his friends ranging from 4 1/2 to 3. The kids painted on the windows and doors, then glued and nailed the houses together.

Making these kid friendly was a lot more time consuming then I thought. It took about 3 1/2 hours to get all the pieces for 8 houses cut and milled, then 10+ hours to do all the predrilling, painting, and other misc tasks, including building a kid sized workbench.

I rabbited the sides so the pieces would fit together more easily for the kids. The roofs are 5/8 beveled siding. I liked the tapering effect as it gets narrow towards the soffits and leaving the roofs in teh rough makes it more rustic looking. The porch roof sits on a ledger and the posts are connected with dowels. The inside includes a ladder effect (seriers of small kerfs) for young birds to get out earlier (I read that helps, but I don't know). The back roof panel is also screwed on to allow for cleaning.

7/8" #3 cedar with exterior primer and paint. Details are exterior acrylic paint.

the kids (and parents) had a blast and all the houses went together without and major problems or broken pieces.

You are a brave, brave man.

Seriously though, what a great idea! 4 new little woodworkers in the making. There are far too few hands-on activities for kids these days, and far too many playstations, game boys, tvs, dvds... (you get the picture).

That was a great idea and I know everyone really enjoyed it. We did something similar at Church for the kids last year. I went to HD and they gave me about 30 of the kids workshop projects and we all had a blast putting them together. I think the adults helping enjoyed it most.

That is great. I like it when the kids are involved in things more.

About a month or so ago Mark took some pieces of wood he had cut out to make little step stools to his cub scout meeting for the boys to put together. He sent out an email telling the boys what they needed to bring and then took all the pieces in. He said it was a great time for everyone. He was busy helping the boys put theirs together and our son didn't put his together right away but a couple of days later they were in the shop putting things together. Mark said the boys didn't want to go home because they were enjoying it way to much. He said it was a good feeling to have the boys so interested in making things out of wood.

And now there are about 9 more future wood workers hanging around our town.

Not to hijack the thread, but hows you ankle Mrs. W,

                            Hope you're feeling better.

I broke my wrist 2 1/2 years ago and after 3 operations and tons of therapy, it still doesn't work all that great. Thank god for Vicodin.
