    Simple Pine/Maple Chest

The MIL asked for a simple light colored chest to use as a 'coffee table'.It is 16" high and 30" long. The pine is White Pine resawn from 8/4 stock that Ken Weaver and I bought a while back. It is from upstate New York, harvested around 15 years ago. The top is spalted Ambrosia Maple. The finish is Amber Shellac, best I remember, around 8 coats. I have never had so much trouble putting finish on a project, and I really don't know why it was such hassle. I sanded it back to bare wood twice and finally got a finish I would accept, but not one I'll brag about. It ain't fancy like I prefer to do, but she wanted simple. Thanks for looking.
    Ken

      Nice Top!!

Love the top. It really offsets the simplicity of the chest.
LOML has been bugging to finish (start) the toy/hope chest for my daughter that I have the pine panels bought for over a year now.
I like the top on yours and may have to fancy it up a little for my daughter.

Nice work, Ken. Would have looked cool if you had matced the ends with the knots in the handle area!

                            Very nice Ken!

I think that if you'd have made it more "fancy", the beauty of the top would have been lost. I like the contrast of the dark streaks in the spalted maple against the color of the knotty pine. Simplicity is often the best route.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I appreciate them.
The MIL liked it so that's more important than the trouble I had applying the finish. Still, I am glad to see it gone.
                              Thanks again,
