    Computer Desk and Returns

This inspiration was from the 2006 Room and Board Catalog.
The reason for the two returns is so the wife and I can work at the same time.

    Desk is 5' x 2 1/2'. Returns are 3' x 2'.
The frame is ebonized poplar. two coats of black dye, a coat of General Finishes Java Gel Stain, and 4 coats of high gloss wipe on poly. The tops are 7/8" maple with 6 coats of satin wipe on poly.

The legs are 2 1/2" and the rails (apron) are 3" wide. The joinery is floating tenons 3/4" thick mitred into the legs and 1 1/2" deep into the rails. The returns are bolted into the side of the desk.

Is the top photo an "after setup" pic? I notice a cabinet with drawers on the right ... did you make that as well?

I'm considering something similar, but need to use the space underneath for file cabinets, CPU, printer, scanner, etc. as the study I share with wife and daughter is only about 10x12. Packing 3 computers, 2 printers, a film and a flatbed scanner in there, and having any desktop space available, is a real challenge! I think your solution's clean lines and light tones would be essential.

The top photo is from the Room and Board catalog. Since the original posting, I have finished setting up my computer. I have a laptop on the left return and a desktop on the right/middle. I have a large Antec server case that fits nicely under the desk. I also have two filing cabinets that fit underneath the returns.

The one thing that I hadn't considered beforehand was a keyboard tray. With a 3" apron and a 7/8" top, a keyboard tray would be too low.
