    GR-Research Speakers

I just started a speaker building business to help fund my audio/home theater habit.

They only look ok but the important thing is that the customer is pleased.

Inquiring minds want to know....how do they sound, what brand drivers did you use, and what's the crossover configuration?

Monte, as with most hi-end speakers I used 3/4 mdf. This particular customer wanted cherry veneer with a redish stain on top instead of paint.

The customer is anxiously awaiting delivery and I just got done breaking in the drivers so I haven't had time to turn up the volume for some critical listening. What I have heard has been clear, detailed and dynamic. I've been impressed so far and will continue to build speakers designed by GR-Research. I am also in the middle of building a set of home theater speakers using the Parts Express RS series which are some incredible drivers for the price.

The driver's are made by GR-Research and the crossovers were custom designed by the same company. Here's a quote from GR-Research:

"This design is also ideal for applications where there is little to no space between the listeners and the rear wall. Such an application makes placing a direct radiation speaker only a few feet from the listeners and aimed at their heads very undesirable. Mounting the A/V-1RS high up on the wall adds the distance and space needed to create a large sound field, even in a small room."

Regarding what I don't like; I'm very picky about my own work and there were a couple of little things with the stain and poly that didn't turn out as well as I would like. But like I said before, the customer was happy so I guess I should be happy. Thanks for the nice comments.

In the future I want to use hardwood for the front baffles and veneer for the rest of the speaker. I've seen some people do this and I just like how it looks.

Here's an example of veneered speaker with solid hardwood baffle from Salk Sound.

Great looking speakers! A lot better than the particle board jobs I used to build for cars back in high-school.

                        Kano,

They look great to me! I hope that they sound as good.

Did you use a GR kit, or just order parts from them? I must saw, looking at their website, the kits look very nice. I hope to build a decent music only system (I'm happy with my home theater system) or 3 for the house in the next few years, and the price looks great compared to buying speakers. Looks like a fun project.

speakers look great. I have a question concerning the Salk Sound speakers: Does gluing a hardwood baffle that thick to the front of an MDF or plywood box present directional expansion problems? Just curious. Thanks
