Will you be able to lower the mattress before he can stand up?

Yes. There are small Bolivian rosewood supports holding the mattress support at the height they currently are at. Just unscrew those and drop the mattress support to the bottom cross members.

The bolivian rosewood is absolutely gorgeous, but I don't use more than 4 cubic inches of the stuff. I split several pieces with Kreg screws before pre-drilling a large enough hole.

Very interesting design. The posts don't look like there under undo stress, which surprises me a little. Does that thing get to swinging and rocking when the little one jumps around?

He's not quite at the age where he jumps around. Based on seeing my 18 month old niece in a smaller version of this crib, yes, the thing will be all over the place. She gets hers so that the suspension wires are nearly horizontal. Obviously I'd need to move the crib farther from the wall for this to happen; I might just leave it where it is!
