Thoughts on a combination mobile stand

I'm a longtime lurker and beneficiary of tons of info from this great site. I have recently moved to AZ from Chicago and lost my third car garage workspace. As a result I am thinking about building a mobile cabinet for my BT. I am thinking of something like the stands built by others in the old articles thread and combining it with the UTS (mainly the miter saw and router inserts). This would give me an all in one space saving solution.

I did come across on person who did do something like that, but they mounted the saw perpendicular to the stand (so it also functioned as on outfeed table). I would be looking to mount my saw parellel (more like a side table).

Does anyone see any inherent problems with this combination or any major design challenges that I should keep in mind?

    Thanks,
    Charles

I don't see a problem with the orientation you propose. Many have done similar designs.

Where I would worry is in the number of purposes you propose. That thing could get pretty heavy with so much going on. I'd look at a torsion box base and some nice casters to get things going. Construction of the carcass should be fully dadoed.

It sounds like a fun project!

      Welcome!

Some of the problems with having more than just the saw on the stand is that sometimes there are conflicts in space requirements for setups and cuts. Like when I need to crosscut a longer board or some bigger sheet material and the router setup I really don't want to take down is in the way.

I've got a 21829 (the sears BT clone on a mobile stand) with a pair of half-rail extensions and I put my router table insert with a Jessem lift in the end. I also work from the right end when using the router table. It makes for a somewhat short router table, but I also have a portable outfeed table for the saw that works as an infeed table when using the router.

I work out of a 10x12 shed and my saw gets moved outside for about every woodworking session. Space and portability are major concerns for me.

If you do make a mobile base, you really ought to add extension rails for your saw. I really enjoy having mine on there. The extra table surface is very nice to have, especially if you also incorporate your router table.

As Pelligrini said, the extra rail length is handy. I recently added 6.5 inches of rail to my BT3100. This allows the rip fence to go out all the way to a full 24 inch rip without having to reconfigure the rails. I also purchased two additional accessory tables and the 6.5" rail extension allows all three accessory tables to be mounted to the right of the saw, giving a nice big table surface. I've got a jig saw mounted in one accessory table and a router mounted in another one. The third is just a filler.

The reason I point this out, is that I built my mobile base to almost exactly match the footprint of the saw, before I added the extra rail length. I wanted to give myself as much drawer storage space as possible. Had I added the rail length before, I could have gained an additional 6.5 inches of storage space. Something to consider, anyway.

You might want to consider something like this http://christophermerrill.net/ww/pla...l_Stand_1.html ,and build your tablesaw into it. It seems to have everything else there,Tommyt
