Also check to make sure the pivot is installed in the bottom of the SMT correctly. I believe that this is also mentioned in the FAQ that Loring sent you.

Mine has kept alignment for years. It gets bumped quite a bit.
Soon you won't have to play with the saw sailing season is coming! Is your user name number your Offshore number? We sail a J boat but saw the light with crew numbers - now back to smaller boats.Comment

Oh if only to sail again. I used to have a C30 on Galveston bay, now I'm in MN and boatless. People just don't understand that lake sailing doesn't compare to offshore sailing. Someone asked me what kind of truck I would need to pull the boat up here (not fully comprehending the size). When I said an 18 wheeler with a flatbed and boat cradle, then just stared at me funny. Woodworking was supposed to help fill that hobby gap, it hasn't worked so well so far.
Never got to be on a J, but always wanted to. Funny how everyone always wants to go sailing, but never has time isn't it?Comment

I think Fleet #1 of both J24 and J22 are in MN. You should be able to get a ride on one of them come the spring. There are probably lots assorted Melges in your area as well.
Moving a 30 foot 8000 lb + boat with a 10 foot beam is no small feat. I have helped get a C&C30 ready for travel to east coast. It is a lot of work and permits. One guy at my club has a J35 with 12 foot beam that he has towed to Annapolis and Michigan from Ontario. He has a trailer and with custom tow vehicle!. I have a hard enough time towing a 24 foot boat.
We are "only" 3 months to launch. Sailing does take a lot of time and there never seems to be enough of it!!Comment

It's not only the permits to transport, its winter storage as well. I was spoiled in that I could leave in water year round and sail 10.5 months (11 if you're hearty) out of the year.
I did see that there is a J24 fleet here that I didn't know about but only 15 or 16 boats, so a ride may not be that easy. Always worth looking into.Comment
