My 3100 is probably 4 years old or something like that. Lately (past 2-3 months) I seem to be having trouble setting the blade bevel to exactly 90 deg. I can get it dead on (using a Starrett square, but as I swing the locking handle, the blade moves (kind of a jumping motion). The movement is always there, but the amount is random.
I used to hold the hight adjustment wheel as I rotated the locking lever and that used to work all the time. Now that trick doesn't seem to work all the time. I can feel an engagement or dis-engagement as I start to rotate the handle, and that's just when the blade moves.
I've blown out the guts with compressed air, used candle wax on the gears, backed out the bevel stop screws, althoiugh this only happens at 90 deg. setting, anywhere from 45 deg to about 85 deg works fine. Problem is I don't do much cutting at these angles.
I do get the blade to 90 deg, but it's getting to be a PITA, and I'm now at a loss for what to do.
If I could afford it, I'd just part out the 3100 and buy that new 10" Rikon with a sliding table, although the old lady would probably kill me even if I was able to do so.
So I guess there's gotta be a fix floating out there.
Somebody please help.
Bruce
