Help!!! I Really Should Know This

My 3100 is probably 4 years old or something like that. Lately (past 2-3 months) I seem to be having trouble setting the blade bevel to exactly 90 deg. I can get it dead on (using a Starrett square, but as I swing the locking handle, the blade moves (kind of a jumping motion). The movement is always there, but the amount is random.

I used to hold the hight adjustment wheel as I rotated the locking lever and that used to work all the time. Now that trick doesn't seem to work all the time. I can feel an engagement or dis-engagement as I start to rotate the handle, and that's just when the blade moves.

I've blown out the guts with compressed air, used candle wax on the gears, backed out the bevel stop screws, althoiugh this only happens at 90 deg. setting, anywhere from 45 deg to about 85 deg works fine. Problem is I don't do much cutting at these angles.

I do get the blade to 90 deg, but it's getting to be a PITA, and I'm now at a loss for what to do.

If I could afford it, I'd just part out the 3100 and buy that new 10" Rikon with a sliding table, although the old lady would probably kill me even if I was able to do so.

So I guess there's gotta be a fix floating out there.

    Somebody please help.

    Bruce,

Not sure if this is the same issue but I had problem getting mine to move properly when setting the bevel angle a while back. after puzzling over this for a while I realized my problem was something really simple and stupid. The screw in the center of the main adjustment wheel was loose and therefore the clutch mechansim did not engage properly. I tightened it up and everything was fine.

As I said I am not sure if this is the same issue but thought I would share.

Same here, I don't have a BT so I have no idea. I will say Bruce is right about this starting to become joke central recently, and a lot less ww talk.

So THAT is my problem. Thanks! I have been extrapolating the difference in where it jumps to versus where I have to start "setting" it. I usually get it on the third try pretty accurately.

Or that some of us haven't had it do that, so we hadn't a clue.

I was going to suggest doing a good clean-up. I know I need to get all the dust out of mine.

Hey lighten up! As if yours is appropiate? Just because you only got one direct answer in reply that just happens to have solved your problem is no reason to cast scorn on those that wish to post more in the OT forum.

Like many others I read your post and did not have the "right" answer never having this problem myself. I'm not saying mine has been flawless; I think I now hold the bevel/height wheel out when ever I change functions but I do bevel cuts so rarely that I really do not remember for sure.

                        Bruce,

As Mark points out, you initiated the sarcasm. When someone leads with sarcasm, I generally assume that they can handle a little bit in return. My apologies for having misjudged you.

My reply was intended to be helpful. Provide a meaningful title to your post and the people who have an answer and are inclined to be helpful will notice it and reply. Few of us read every post every day.

I am glad that I did stumble upon the post though, because now I'll know what to look for if I ever have the same problem.

                          Major Apology "again"

                          Doug,

Well once again I find myself apologizing for using my mouth before my brain kicks in. So as I try to extricate my foot that part of my anatomy I sit on, please accept my most sincere apologies for being a moron.

Hope this will reinstate some good will among the members of this forum.
