Last week I was having trouble raising the saw blade. The lift seemed to bind, then the crank handle broke. I tried to order a hand crank for the bt3000 (metal) but had to settle for a bt3100 handle (plastic). I did notice that the new handle had more and larger ribs on the back side. I cleaned the lift screw and lubricated with an old can of Schwinn bicycle lube. I swear the saw has never felt smoother, better than new.

Sounds like you fixed the problem. Just as an FYI there are a couple more trouble spots on raising/lowering the blade.
First is the shims on the sliding bracket just behind the crank handle. If those fall out then it bind when you try to move the blade up or down. If you have a problem and a shim does fall out your best bet is to tear it down and replace the shims - some folks opt to upgrade to the BT3100-style shims. They were redesigned to avoid this problem.
Second is if the guard/splitter assembly is removed for non-through cuts, when you put it back on make sure it is not tilted backwards. If it is it can bind on the back edge of the blade slot in the table when the blade is lowered.David
