Large Panel Bits

Has anyone figured out how to use the larger panel bits in the BT3000? They won't fit through the existing hole in the side table. I was thinking of getting an extender and an extra layer of MDF or something so that the whole bit could fit above the table top. I haven't done this or bought any bits because the idea scares the s**t out of me. BTW I have an older RE600 Ryobi router.

Also has anyone attached a router lifter into their side table? Not that you really need one as you can lift out the table and flip it over to adjust it.

I have heard of folks doing the extender/false top thing as you describe. the keys to doing that successfully is to get a good quality extender (minimal runout/vibration) and keep the MDF as thin as you can. The reduced speeds large bits run at helps but you really need to keep everything about an assembly like this perfect to be safe and get good results.

Raised Pannel set up

I use this setup for raised pannels. No extention needed. I did remove the sole plate& springs to get extra clearence. the 1/4 in. ply is there to give more room between router table & bit. Hope this helps.

My BIL went to his local machine shop and had the hole in the accessory table enlarged to accommodate his panel bit. Says he thinks it cost him 5 bucks. Then he fabricated a couple of new inserts from scrap plastic.

Use vertical panel raising bits and they will fit through the existing hole. Only downside is you cannot do curved raised panels.

I have an extension table on my BT3100 and the router mounts to the wooden extension table. This reduces vibration and permits the larger opening for large panel raising bits.

Now that I haven't heard of folks getting slaughtered by their 3" panel bits going flying out of their extender, I may try this. Keep your fingers crossed for me (but not your arms across the saw)!
