That explains it! I have a 4 - 2-1/2 reducer and use a short piece of PVC that fits inside the reducer and the dust port.

Oooohhh, I get it now! I've always thought the 2-1/4" vs 2-1/2" designations were sort aspecific measurements.

Now that I've got my DC I'm trying get to specific connection requirements. With the shopvac there was so little choice that I just sort of gave up. With the DC there's more choice of connectors and tubes, but designing that "just right" set up of my shop is something of a challeng.

      This helps.

      Thanks, guys.

Thats how I had my saw setup at first but I thought it was really cutting down on the flow to the DC so I took a 2 hose approach.

2 1/4" to the dust port and 4" to a pan on the bottom.

The 2 1/4" hose is one a borrowd from the shop vac.
The adapter on theh DC is a 4" to 2 1/2 that fits the shop vac hose.
It's foil taped to the DC.
Later when I get a shark I'll run 2nd 4" hose and split it between the dust port and guard.

I also made a mistake of buying 4x2½ reducer. Is the air flow reduced further by using a piece of PVC that fits inside the reducer and the dust port? Is there an "adaptor" that will fit outside instead?

The short answer here is that you want the biggest clear diameter you can get, no matter how you achieve it. I don't know whether there's a "store-bought" adapter that will fit on the outside (I doubt it). If there is, this would actually be preferable to the adapter I have since it is 2-1/4" OD, which means the ID is probably down to right at 2". An "outside" adapter would keep the full 2-1/4" of the BT's port clear. That 1/4" may not sound like much but for something this small, it's a lot ... almost a 27% increase in free area.

If anybody finds an adapter like that, please post where to get it. Or if someone wants to start a side business....

You can use a 2.5" - 4" adaptor and foil tape it to the dust port on the BT.. the ID on both is the same,

The foil tape is strong enough.. It won't fall off.

Are you refering to the foil tape used for HVAC? Will it hold?

Something I have done, though not with DC hose, is wrap some kind of reinforced tape around a butted connection and then add a hose clamp on each side of the joint. Multiple wraps of tape provides adequate strength; the clamps keep the adhesive from gradually giving up the ghost.

The foil tape never gives up the ghost. It is the aluminum tape that has the peel off backing. It's sticky as....well good tape. Propably sticks to everything but oil. It is shiney aluminum and doesn't have brown paper and strings in it. The later type is pretty useless IMO.
This is the tape that I use for all my taped connections. It is removable by cutting it off.
Its the tape that you can see in this photo.

Is the foil tape sold at BORG? If so, which section can I find it in? TIA

I did find it in plumbing. As I was leaving, I saw something that worked much better. It was a rubber 2" to 2" coupling with steel clamps on each end. It fit on nice and tight.

I was reading through this thread and had decided to recommend the rubber coupling but Jarhead beat me to it! For a removable installation that is the way to go.
