    Making a splitter

I need to make a cut-down splitter for my bt3100. I saw a page on this before, but I can't find it now. And what material do I use. I can't find metal thick enough.

What you're looking for is 14 Gauge Cold Rolled Steel sheet.
It's .0747 thick and should do a good job.

FYI -- prior to cutting down my riving knife, I bought a replacement riving knife for $10-$15 in case I ever wanted to go back. You might keep that option in mind when looking for and pricing materials.

          Regards,
          Tom
p.s. I've never looked back, especially now that I have a Shark guard.

Lee sells a shark splitter for a little over $20 delivered. If you need to buy metal plate to make your own - is it really worth it?

Thanks for all of your help. A google search, a short car drive, 30 minutes of work and $0 later, I now have a riving knife. I got a small cutoff of .09 aluminum for free., but the guy there did look at me kinda weird when I asked for a small cuttof of .9 sheet metal.

I know what you mean about giving you a wierd look. I have a "Metal Supermarket" near me and sometimes I ask for a small piece, which they give to me for free along with the LOOK.

                Glad you found everything!

No, no, no, it was because it asked for .9" sheet metal, not .09", but the guy corrected me right away. The place I went to is actually a HUGE, I mean HUGE (worldwide) operation that sells aluminun for compans in huge rolls and what not, and make semi-trailers. (Many trucks have trouble finding the place and traffic has been backed up for a mile or so because of that) They are used to people comming in for cuttofs, such as contractors wanting stuff for duct work, so they were cool about that.

Ooops!! I did not read that correctly but think of it, 0.9" sheet metal makes a very strong splitter

                    Thanks for the correction.

If you guys want to finish these out yourself, I will cut them out of .09 steel in the correct shape and you can do the filing and painting for about $12. Shipping is included, but thats $4.05 of the cost.
The aluminum will work fine though as long as its a good grade. It's probably the same thing Stop signs are made of. Pretty rigid stuff for aluminum.

Traffic Control across the U.S. is suddenly in a state of dissarray due to mass dissappearances of stop signs across the country. Authorities are baffled as to how a group could organize such a feat across the entire continental 48 states. Members are estimated to be in the thousands to coordinate such an event, but no motive is known at this point .....
