some bt3 mobile base considerations...

Were you using a 6" dado set on the BT3K ?

I saw another thread basically saying that with a 6" set, the deepest cut you could make would be about 1 1/2 inches. Is that right ? That doesn't seem like nearly enough for this purpose unless the torsion box members were no more than 3 inches high.

Just trying to think all this out.

My mobile base is not yet complete but below is a picture as it is today.
The design is mostly stolen from a book by Danny Proulx. The design is different from most designs here at the site. There is no torsion box at all. .

Great job with your design. Its appealing since it is simplier without the torsion box.

Would you mind posting more pictures?

I used 3/4 inch birch ply of a good enough quality to look halfway decent. Biscuits were used for the joints and I also ironed on some Birch veneer to the exposed edges. The torsion box was made from some other type of plywood I had in the shop and I assembled it using a method I saw on the DIY network with glue and nails, I screwed the top and botom sheets to the core. This thing does not flex!
My BT cabinet is under the finished projects folder on this site.

Optical illusion. The base stands straight.

Optical illusion, I guess my picture taking skills are not that great. Below are couple more pictures. The first has a straight edge set against the front rail. The second picture is from the back - you can see the hinge and vertical supports that hold both rails and plywood top between rails.
The credit for the design belongs to Danny Proulx, it is from his book. I only made minor adjustments.

I did a mobile base with folding half rails thing. for the folding part on the rails I used hinges and Tnuts from Jeffs Tnuts. Worked like a champ. For the top I use 23/4" MDF and laminate florring mounted on 2" aluminum angle iron brackets with tnuts.

The outside of my torsion box is a 2x4 ripped down to about 3 1/4 inches tall. The 3/4 plywood top and the 7/16 waferboard bottom are inside of this making the inner members a little under 2 inches high. That makes the 6 inch dado plenty tall to do the cuts in the inner members.
