    3100 Mobile Cabinet Base

    (NEW USER ALERT!!)

Does anyone have a Mobile Cabinet base made up for their 3100?

I have seen all kinds of ideas/bases for the 3000 but haven't come across one for the 3100 yet.

What about just doing away with the metal stand all together and making a cabinet base like the ones used for the 3000?

For the preventative and ongoing maintenance does having the bottom of the saw cabinet enclosed by a mobile base hurt the saw? From a heat or dust standpoint?

    Thanks!

Look at the Articles section for mobile bases-BT3000 cabinet bases should fix exactly the same as BT3100. The only design difference would be to make sure your color selection for the mobile base matches the BT3100.

    Or not!

As far as enclosing the bottom, heat really shouldn't be an issue since there are plenty of other openings. Others have enclosed even these openings to decrease dust leakage and haven't reported motor overheating problems. To me, it makes sense to enclose the bottom because a significant amount of dust comes through the bottom. I collect it and vacuum out from time to time. Here's the back of my saw while it was under construction:

And a "before and after" picture from my 1st mobile cabinet attempt to my 2nd. The difference is I designed the bottom to collect the dust towards the bottom and back end and added a gate to the back to make it easy to vacuum everything clean.

I don't think it's a good idea to completely block off the bottom because the dust will just build up in the saw. It would be difficult to completely block that area off though. Either do as gugie and most other have done (dust falls into a vacuum chute or into an accessible collection area) or just leave a space so you can vacuum it out. Mine looks like this:

The saw is mounted on a bit of a shim which makes it easy to clean up the very small amount of dust that falls beneath.

Thanks for the info Bob and Gugie. Bob any chance you could post more pics of you cabinet? []

I am still trying to get an idea of how I want mine to look/work. I wasn't planning on extending the rails. I just wanted something that is easier to move around than the side casters that come in the accessory kit. I also wanted some storage down there since it is wasted space right now.

        Thanks,

        Neil

          Neil,

I've done quite a bit of sawing with this configuration. It dramatically improves the dust collection capabilities.

I am in the process of building a mobile cabinet base for my BT3100. I have taken ideas from others here and my design is based on a shortened version using the standard rails and a set of half rails. I just started a week ago and have the torsion box done. Here is my "Shorty" version. Double click in the middle of the image to see a larger version.

It is going to go live at LarryG house, I have moved to a different saw. It was a blast to build.

I never get tired of this question.
I think the same question pops up about once a month. I think it is great to see how each individual has customized ("Magiver-ed") their BT.
One of these days I am going to finally get around to this project. Just too many in front. I bet building one first would make the rest of these projects a bit easier.
Keep those pictures and modifications coming. Great ideas here~!!!

You can check out mine here under completed projects (might need to search back a month or so). I built it with a 3 inch opening below and made a drawer to fit which collects all the dust that the shop vac misses. I made 2 large sections underneath for larger tools and cases. There are also 4 drawers in the middle (2 in front, 2 in back). No wasted space...
I just completed my extension table top and am trying to figure how to mount a router to it.
