But not to Alaska, OR the Island. We are not considered part of the United State of America! America only needs us in time of war. ATTU, PEARL HARBOR?

Sorry just doesn't make sence, goes to the same center and with "if it fits it ships" anywhere! Ground shipping only? Yea we call it a ship to the ISLAND but beleive it or not we have a road to Alaska, its called the ALCAN and was built for WWII. Same price! OK they do put it in the air but still same cost, just spread out among other areas so we all pay the same. Its the same thing from East Coast to West coast in mileage!

Probably should have hit the delete button befor posting. Just having a bad day I guess. I just feel like the red headed step child up here.

Sorry folks, I'll try to stop doing this.

Cork58 I think you should keep reminding those of us that live in the lower 48 and maybe folks will start to voice their displeasure to the companies who have such policies. A huge part of my states economy is dependent on AK!

Both Alaska and Hawaii are valued parts of the country with much to recommend them. However a disastrous military event, and the most recent foreign invasion (well, ignoring the Mexican army guys who couldn't turn around on the bridge this week...) even if both overcome later in the war, are perhaps not the two best examples of why we would want them in 2011...

The problem isn't that your state doesn't matter or is unloved, it's that your [hassle factor : potential profit] ratio isn't strong enough.

Hassle could be extra costs, but it might just be needing to have a different process than for everywhere else that eliminates next-day options, or limits items to USPS, or whatnot. Having to code a web page to calculate shipping correctly is a cost, having to document and train employees on different processes is a cost, having to modify literature to indicate shipping times will take longer to AK/HI is a cost, even the time required to learn that the may be no special handling required is a type of cost. Those may be trivial or significant depending on the particular situation a company is in.

On the profit side, you only have ~700K people up there. That's less than one quarter of 1% of the country overall. If they were all in one metro area it would only be about the 75th largest city in the country. So, it's not that the individual people are valued less, rather there are simply a lot less of them to value... If Wyoming or North Dakota had special shipping rules I suspect they'd be excluded regularly as well...
