A friend just got a free cell phone

    He's retired living modestly.
He took the middle option of 125 free minutes each month with rollover of unused minutes. No fees, no contract, no purchase of phone.
You may know someone that might qualify.

I received an email concerning this just the other day. Check it out and you will see that it is for people who are collecting welfare, etc.
Another example of our hard earned tax dollars at work.

You don't have to be collecting welfare, etc. I think it's just an easier way to verify the income levels to be elligible for the program.

It sounds like it is funded from some of the taxes on our phone bills.

Maybe it would qualify if one used the phone to call the local lumberyards for pricing etc., or call Lowes to see is that closeout item listed in the BT3 bargan alerts is in stock anywhere...

Yea, it probably should be in the cofee pot.

The reason I said it was for people collecting welfare, etc., is because I completed all the steps involved to get one and they wanted to know if I was using section 8 housing, wanted to know my medicaid number, etc.. They even said the info I provided would have to be verified thru the appropriate agencies. If those programs aren't welfare, then I don't know what you would call it. And they are all funded by your tax dollars.

I am not against welfare as there are many people who need help. But the free cell phone is somewhat "over the top" in my opinion.

I agree this would be over the top if we still had pay phones.

Here is how to qualify in Florida.
Note: My friend only gets SSI.
He resides in what was his parents home and was left to him upon their death.
He does not get welfare or any of the other qualifiers.
So This BARGAIN might be useful to anyone you might know on SSI.

This is funded by the same fee on our phone bills that funded all those telephone lines running out to rural areas. So anyone with phone service in the sticks should probably not complain about it unless they want to start paying the real cost of running those lines. I'm pretty sure that $500/mo phone bills aren't what anyone is asking for.

You're absolutely correct about the funding. People need to stop and think before they complain about something they know nothing about.
