    Irwin/Marples 3pc chisel set at Grizzly $14 (YMMV)

    Grizzly has the 3pc blue handled Irwin chisels on sale for a good price of $14:

    However, when I went into the B-ham Grizzly and picked up a set, what I got was the Record branded Marples blue chip chisels. Unlike every Irwin branded blue chip set I have seen recently, these say very clearly that they are made in Sheffield England. Current Irwins are all made in china as far as I can tell.

    Plenty good deal for a beginner chisel user like myself. Particularly when matched with Grizzly's $9 Eclipse style honing guide.

    "YMMV" is in the title because I have no idea if all the Grizzly locations have the same chisels or what would happen if you mail ordered. I'm just reporting what I ended up with.

      Was that your first trip to Grizzly? I live down here in Federal Way and thought about making the trip up just to take a look around.

          You may find Photojosh... that they are not just a good deal for a beginner user like yourself as you mentioned but.... a good deal for an experience WW as well. I purchased a set of the older style Marples "Blue Beaters" in 1975 and I still use them today. They are about 3/4" shorter than original as I have sharpened them more times than I care to remember.

          I did pick up a 1/8" Irwin Marples about two years ago as I need that size for fine mouthed hand cut DT's. The steel is not quite as good as the original Marples but very sufficient IMO. I believe the reason the set has been drastically reduced is because you will find you use the 1/4"-3/8"--1/2" for the majority of most bench work. I rarely use a 3/4" or 1" and I am in the shop five days a week. But.. on occasion the 3/4" and 1" get the call.

          So.. with these and if you pick up a 1/4"-3/8" you may be set for much longer than you originally imagined when you purchased them. I have a set of English Ashley Isle's but... I find I pick up the blue beater off my chisel rack 95% of the time. I would say the Marples are hard to beat but.. they don't call them Blue Beaters for nothing.

          Enjoy your deal and learn to sharpen without honing guides... you will find that an exact angle doen't make that much difference. But... you will find that any cutting tool that is not sharp is a piece of crap regardless of brand.. quality or price...

              It's worth it. Pretty fun and the guys who work the showroom there are nice guys.

                  Yeah, I understand. But for $9 I figured it couldn't hurt to pick up the honing guide as well.

                      It's not that far, and you have all those outlet stores and casinos you can drive by on the way. Just remember Grizzly is not open on the weekends.

                          I was actually at the Mount Baker theater back in June to see Brian Regan's standup. I had no idea at the time that Grizzly was up there since I just moved to the area. I may have to play hookie from work and go up one day.

                                  FWIW regarding these chisels and Sarge's comments regarding useful sizes. Grizzly does have the 6pc Irwin/Marples set as well, and the one in the display at the b-ham grizzly says "made in england" very clearly on the blades. When I asked one of the guys working there if that was just an old set and if the ones in the back were the "made in china" ones, he said that as far as he knew they were the made in england ones.

                                  At $60 not as great of a deal as the 3pc for $14. But still a better deal than paying $70 for the made in china Irwin set elsewhere.
