That's a very good deal if the shipping cost isn't prohibitive. I put one in my cart to see what it would cost for shipping but for some reason it wouldn't calculate it. They probably figure freight charges on a case by case basis.

      from their website...
      --------------------------------------------

Something in your cart requires Freight Shipping. You cannot quote your shipping rate automatically, so you have two options:

      1. Call us during store hours and we'll quote shipping over the phone
      OR
      2. Simply complete your order, and we will call you to confirm shipping costs before completing your order.

Yeah, I saw that. That's why I wrote the last sentence in my post.

Are you sure that's not the hybrid type saw; identical to the sears 22124? It sure looks like it to me. I hear SC has 'em with the 3hp motor.

I think you might be you're correct that it's not their industrial 3hp saw, but it's still a really good deal on a very good saw.

I wonder why I can't find that saw on the Steel City website? Special model made only for that vendor???

I think it's a model that's been updated/outdated by another. Note there's no riving knife on this one, but the newer models have it.

That model has been replaced (as Scott guessed) with the newer granite top with riving knife Sween.. and that's straight from the "mouth" of Steel City. Highland took 10 to the Atlanta WW Show in late Jan. and sold all I believe. My buddy Ken H. got one of them as it is a great price on a 3 HP saw backed by the full 5 Year Warranty by Steel City.

Thanks SARGE, so, seeing as you have a buddy who has one, is it a hybrid or a true cabinet saw?

I believe it is a "hybrid"... whatever a hybrid really is as I have seen that debated and kicked around a bit. It has trunnions that mount to the side of the cabinet and it's 3 HP.. You may have to clarify to me exactly what constitutes a Hybrid as I have seen it interpreted several ways.

And.. I believe the model is the 35685. I will call Jim Box over Steel City technical and ask him for sure.

                        Regards...

Yeah, the lines between hybrid and cabinet saw have never been fuzzier! SC did/does offer a 1-3/4hp saw that has cabinet mounted trunnions, that's also available with a 3hp motor. The trunnion system is nearly identical to system on the Craftsman "Zipcode" hybrids, but the SC models were all made robust enough to accept the 3hp motor. I think the differentiating factor that Dave is getting at is that this is not the same saw as SC's industrial cabinet saw which has a beefier trunnion system all the way around, that's more similar to what the Unisaw and Griz 1023 have.

Keep in mind that I've never seen a 35685 in person, but I do have some pics from some of the earlier versions of the SC Industrial cabinet saw and one of their hybrids. As long as you guys will forgive me if I'm wrong, I'd guess that the 35686 is more similar to the first pic than the 2nd, which features the massive swing arm and triple belt drive system.

                            ****

I would agree, Scott. The original "thingy" called a "Hybrid" was the DW and Jet which brought the motor inside the cabinet in lieu of hanging it out the *ss with 6 miles of in-efficient belt travel. But.. those true "hybrids mounted the trunnions to the bottom of the table-top in lieu of mounting to the cabinet. Steel City decided to change that in their version. They did use the lighter trunnions (they're not that light mind you) than the Indurtrial TS but... you gotta do what you gotta do to say in a price point competition.

So... with all that said... the Steel City is actually a light-weight Cabinet saw but by no means a feather-weight as with sufficient trunnions to handle 3 HP and jumping to 3 HP itself... you pretty much have a light-weight cabinet saw capable of handling about anything a hobbyist can throw at it.

                            Regards...

Has anyone bought one of these yet? Just curious to hear some feedback as I'm hopefully going to be in the market for an under $1000.00 table saw soon if the LOML approves.
