    Thank You Amazon!

Wow. Amazon carefully hand selected some woodworking deals for me and sent me an email. Look at the price on that vice! I ordered two as soon as I saw it.

Link to the deal (if you can still get it!)

Says it's Columbian. Maybe it has a secret compartment full of other 'goodies'!

        Edit: Just looked at it.

        Product Dimensions: 14 x 10 x 12 inches ; 1 pounds
        Shipping Weight: 163 pounds

Wonder how well the packing material burns?

Made in the USA price, I am not surprised. Here are what some consider lower then retail prices:

Please educate me, what makes the $920 difference between an HF vise and the one from Amazon?

Actually I have one of these jewels from Harbor Freight. It is heavy as s#it and the fit & finish is quite good. It has a nice big anvil on the back too.

I paid $32 after coupon for it. The steel in this thing might just be worth more than that.

For home use, I doubt you would ever see a difference. These vises, are typically forged, instead of cast (like the HF one), have a higher PSI, replaceable jaws (some cast ones do, some are formed in), open further, and are meant to be used more by machinists/fabricators, where you will get the parts held in the vise, cherry red, repeatedly. (which will heat up the vise, before you beat on it and the parts in it).

Working in a garage, where with the condition of some of the cars, the blue tip wrench saw a fair amount of use, I replaced a 50 year old vice, that broke. The HF one, wouldn't open far enough and wouldn't hold up to the punishment. Now I got lucky enough to find a good one, but not quite the same as what we had (it had a more rare quick release feature).

Among other things the columbian weighs 100 lbs more then the HF. It will also be made of much tougher cast iron and made in the USA. In the realm of the DIYer a heavy duty vice like that is not much of a benefit. If you are in a profession that you need super heavy duty tools then that $1000 vice is not the most expensive one out there.
Why buy a PM2000 when a BT3 seems to do the same job? Why would you ever need a $5000 computer these days when a $500 has all the bells and whistles the average user needs? Why would you ever buy an LN plane when anant is available? It all has to do with the end use.
