Craftsman 5" Twin Cutter saw $31.97 @ Sears Hardware

I was in Sears Hardware in Centreville, VA today and saw this saw on the clearance shelf. They had about 6 of them (5 now) available. YMMV at other Sears locations.

The retail price is $129.99 and it's on sale for 96.97 at sears.com. In the store it was $31.97

    Here's the Sears.com listing
6-amp motor, 5,500 rpm. Two 32-tooth carbide blades cut quickly, cleanly through various materials. Warranted*. Wt. 8.38 lbs.

    Product Overview:
    Item Weight: 8.38 lbs.
    Motor-Engine:
    Amps: 6.0
    Speed Range RPM: 5500 rpm
    Handles:
    Main Type: Barrel grip
    Aux. Handle Position: Side
    Power:
    Type: Electric
    Cord:
    Cord Option: Corded

I've seen these since they came out a few years ago but never felt the urge to buy one, seems like an expensive replacement for a recip saw.

At $32 I figured I'd take a look for myself.

Anyone out there have personal experience with this tool?

I have not, but there are several reviews about its big brother (6") on the Sears site, and they're pretty bad. They say the thing practically melts in their hand (not in their mouth ). Very unfavorable reviews, although that doesn't mean that you'll definitely have problems with yours.

I consider myself to be a rather experienced woodworker, but I don't know the purpose of this saw. Can some one enlighten me? Thanks.

        Twin Cutter

I don't think it's really intended for fine woodworking. There's no provision for accurately guiding the tool, no shoe, base plate, fence, or similar.

It seems to be more of a general purpose multi-material cut-off tool like a reciprocating saw with better cut quality, straighter cut, and less vibration.
