    Store Closing

Rockler in Parma ( Cleveland Area) is closing. I was in there Thursday and a lot of shelves are bare. Everything left is 35% off and some select items are 50% off. They told me they would be gone in two weeks!!

I think we will continue to see a trend here. Woodworking is a luxury, and not a necessity. As gas prices continue to rise, effecting the rise in price in all other consumables, not to mention woodworking machinery, people will be less able to afford their hobby. Especially when salaries/wages remain constant relative to the increase in prices of everything. The weakening dollar also does not help anything. Not to be the "glass is half empty" kind of guy, but things aren't looking good for middle America. I hope I'm wrong.

The economy runs in cycles. This is a downturn that is hurting many people. Hopefully there is a bottom soon, and an upturn will be happening.

That's bad to hear. Everyone in that store was always helpful, especially Bud.

Woodcraft here in Pittsburgh just closed a couple of months ago too. Just closed the doors with everything still in the store.

Hopefully, the swing in the dollar against the Euro in the past week is just that upturn that Hoover mentioned. OTOH, the collapse of Lehman and Merrill Lynch has to be a wrench in the works. Greed has a price after all, doesn't it!

Greed sure does have a price. I look for more stores like Rockler to close. We have a local woodworker's store, and things aren't looking good for them right now either. I really hate to see them close, as they are the only true woodworker's store in the area. Great bunch of people, but things are tough right now. This economy is not good for us, as consumers, and it is not good for our country. Economic downturns (troughs), and upswings (peaks), are definitely cyclical, that's basic economics. But that is with all things held constant. When the controls that are in place, or should be in place, to prevent the greedy, at the top, from dominating/controlling the market in order to make mega millions, or even billions, and then pull out, leaving a mess kind of like what we have now; that is not part of the cyclical nature of an economy. Then you get market crashes with a hard landing. We have not seen the last of it yet. But I think the main thing is not to panic, and to leave everything right where its at, basically that is the only choice right now, as stocks are going to fall hard on the current news.

Hoover, is that your last name, or are you a fan of the economic policies of H. Hoover, which helped this country land even harder in 29 and the following years. I intend no offense. I just thought it ironic that your id is "Hoover" and you were talking the economy is cyclical. And Hoover kept a hands off of the economy philosophy, kind of a 'leave it alone and it will be fine, everyone just needs to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and quit whining'' attitude of tough love. Which in hindsight was a bad idea.

            Regards, Bill

              Store Closing

My friend talked with the manager of the Parma store, and it was corparate that closed the store. He said they are probably just going to sell the rockler brand name items at a Machine tool shop like Production tool somewhere else in Cleveland.

I think it really sucks, as that was the only place on the westside to get wood, now I will have to go to woodcraft, which is all the way on the other side of town.

                It's GONE!!

I stoped in there this morning and they were "open". However, almost everything was gone. Just a few odds and ends. Even the shelves were knocked down and ready to be shipped. Looks like the packed up anything of value and they were on pallets ready to go. What was left was junk that wasn't worth shipping! They will not be there next week!
