Norton Oil Stones - Two for $12.95

Norton had some overstock on their medium and fine Crystalon (silicon carbide) oil stones and I picked up a bunch. For $12.95 you get one each medium and fine sized at 8" x 3" x 1/2" and each stone comes in it's own plastic case. These stones sell for $17.95 EACH through other retailers and you are getting both for $12.95 plus a minimal $1.95 shipping.

    Thanks Brian,

I saw your email alert last night and ordered a set. Is there a reason why the photo shows 3 but the set only has 2? Is there a coarse grade maybe?

      Per the item description:

"Picture is not representative of what you get, it is there to show what the stones look like."

I picked them up too - Brian's right, elsewhere these are $17 + shipping each.

        Thanks for the sale!

That is a stock photo showing all three stones with the coarse. They don't show the plastic box either but I didn't want to go through the trial and error of photo taking for an item that is here and gone in the same day.

I have always used oilstones and once you have put oil on/into a stone there is no going back.

I had heard some folks say that you can use water with an oilstone as long as its new and never had any oil in it. As these should arrive today I thought I would get some opinions before I start using them.

I just got mine today. Haven't had a chance to use them, but they look great. A nice find.

I don't see any harm in trying water first. The water will dry out of the stone in a day or two where oil obviously would not.

That said, I don't have any knowledge to back that up...

Brian, if you see this thread, what do you think, is water ok on these stones?

I've not done it myself, but have heard many folks have great success with mineral spirits on oil stones.

I like that idea. I will definitely give it a try. i do my coarse work with oil stones and have switched/added waterstones for finish sharpening. MS would be less messy.

Good idea. I think you'll find the Crystalon coarse stone will remove material pretty quickly allowing you to go through the range of waterstones for a nice edge.
