I thought they were normally in full swing by now...

    Housing market sucks.....

....so HD and Lowe's don't have the big profits from prior years.
Guess they have to price their deals a little more conservatively?

The one Lowe's deal that caught my attention turned out to be an error. Skil 14.4V lithium ion drill for $25....turns out the deal was for the standard 14.4V Ni-cad....the Li was $90. They used the wrong picture.

        Just a theory

Maybe there is change aloft in the howling winds of winter. Last year my kids suggested we hold off buying presents and just go shopping after Christmas as the stores all seem to have just as good bargains, if not better after Christmas.

So, maybe stores will be experimenting with more after holiday sales. Which might also alleviate some of the work with dealing with potentially fewer returns.

Have fun and shop safely. Er.. should that be shop safety?

Home Depot and Lowes are exactly known for their "sales" to begin with. If you look at a Sunday HD or Lowes flyer you will see 95% of the stuff is regular price. They are just making you aware of the products and reinforcing brand recognition. When you go in HD and Lowes you don't see sale price tags, etc. The only deals really to be found are clearance deals and that happens to slow moving items or when they are no longer carrying a certain brand.

While this is mostly true throughout the year, we've been spoiled for at least the last 3 years with some nice 20% off deals. The first two years it was all power tools, then last year it was just cordless combo packs at HD I think. But it was HD, Lowes and Sears, maybe others. I'd be surprised if all of them gave it up this year. I seem to recall that last year the sale ran much closer to Christmas than it had previously. We'll see what they do this year...

AAAHHH...the good ol' days. IIRC, HD started with the 20% off power tools the last couple weeks before Christmas, and Lowes quickly followed. Those were good times. Good times.

What I really hate is when their flyers show "specials" that aren't special at all. Same price as normal. I guess they're trolling for suckers...

One decent, not spectacular, price I saw at HD yesterday was the Makita LS1013FL for 449.00. If they would just come out with a 10% (or better ) friends and family sale, I'd be on top of it. Even with tax, it is better than the current Amazon price, except you get a 50.00 certificate from Amazon for future purchase. Jim.

I've been saying this for years, first time I've heard someone else say it. THANKS!
BTW, when you consider the buying power that particularly HD has, they should be offering the stuff at 20% less than any other place to begin with, which they don't. You know they are paying a lot less for it than other stores, so their profit margin is actually bigger than a mom and pop. You're lucky if they are competitive. I use them out of convenience, not for bargains.
Also, if you've ever brought it to their attention that something is cheaper elsewhere, they will give you back the difference plus whatever their policy is, but they do not change the price to reflect that they are competing as they say they are. They just rely on the next 20 people who DON'T catch them and make an additional few hundred off them.

They had the three gun dewalt kit in my area for $279 for years. Then they dropped the price to $259 'for a limited time'. After about two weeks of this price, they moved it up to $299 where it has stayed since.
Today, it was at that price on their 'tool deals' website ad. What a bunch of crap!

It isn't just these guys. My local Sears, moved a NIB Milwaukee 5615 router into the clearance section, about 18 months ago, for its retail price (still).

When the first of our Compusa's closed, they marked everything UP or beyond, to the MSRP. Then started taking percentages off. Finally they were advertising 70% off, but NOTHING in the store was 70% off (40% was the highest I saw).

Increased energy prices, and other costs, (and the non event Christmas season), means everyone is worried about their pennies, instead of "get rid of it, and get on moving, we can make it up elsewhere".
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

All well and good, nobody is saying they should discount to the point that they go out of business. Just don't leave an article at the regular price or even raise it and then put it in as a 'special deal' or whatever. That isn't marketing or economics, that borders on fraud. Believe it or not, there are a ton of people out there that will buy something just because it says 'sale', without checking to see if it really is a sale or a good price.
You might say 'well, they get what they deserve for being so foolish', but one of the reasons we have laws is to protect the foolish.

I think you mean "up to 70% off", with the "up to" in fine print. I am sure there was something at 70% off - you know, the thing no one would ever really buy, or something they only have one of.
