Whether it's because of impatience or incompetence, I've never been happy with my ability to sharpen chisels. I've dabbled in all the methods, stones, and sandpaper, but I've always given up partway through and had to suffer with medium-sharp chisels as a result.
A month ago, I bought the WorkSharp from Hartville during their pre-Thanksgiving sale.
If you're already good at sharpening, this tool is probably not worth it for you. If you're like me though, this thing is amazing.
Within 20 minutes of unboxing it, I'd cleaned up a Home Depot grade chisel to a mirror finish. It took me about an hour to to the same for 8 more chisels, a couple of which had giant nail gouges from the time LOML though a chisel and a prybar were pretty much the same thing.
So now I've got two perfect sets of chisels, and a tool set up so that I can maintain the edges.
Hope this helps anyone who's on the fence.-Joe -
Can you sharpen lathe tools on this machine?
Found a nice review here (dosen't look like it's too good for lathe tools): http://woodworkerszone.com/index.php?pageid=ReviewLast edited by MBG; 12-14-2007, 09:30 AM.Comment

I think the general consensus is that it's very credible doing flat edges, but not so hot for curved ones.Comment

Don't forget...
Don't forget the additional 20% discount with a power tool purchase... (even though this has a cord it's considered an accessory). Also a good time to stock up on WorkSharp accessories with the extra 20 off.
Dremel engraver - $15.86

total after discounts is $159.14 for both
B&D screwdriver:

$159.90 for both.
I LOVE my WorkSharp. It is so super simple to use! I could put a decent edge on tools before but this makes it infinitely easier.
Uncle C. is correct. Curved edges are challenging. (Edit- Sorry I didn't word it to answer Ryan directly. I was doing math and didn't see his post.)Last edited by perpetualapprentice; 12-14-2007, 11:21 AM.Comment

If you could find one at your local Rockler it might be a slightly better deal. They sell it for $200 but they'll throw in a $20 gift card plus an extra slotted wheel valued at $19.99. Online it looks like they're sold out.

Edit: I guess if it qualifies for 20% off then I'd say amazon has a better deal. Thanks Perpetual for answering my earlier question.Last edited by ryan.s; 12-14-2007, 11:13 AM.Comment

I purchased one about a month ago and found that sharpening my gouge was quite simple using the slotted wheel. I thought it couldn't have been simpler. I just picked up an additional slotted wheel so I can change grits easily.\"Experience is the toughest teacher. You get the test first and the lesson later.\"Comment

Its too bad that it only handles up to 2" wide plane irons.
My Lee Valley LA plane set has 2 1/4" wide irons and I'd love to use this thing on my chisels and the LA planes.
Anyone know if you can actually run a bit more than the stated 2"?Comment

I asked the same question when I was shopping for a system. The short answer is that you can sharpen from the top of the wheel if you skew the iron, but it's not very precise, but you cannot use the handy guide mechanism under the wheel for irons bigger than 2". Bummer.Comment
