    non-tool bargain (HDTV)

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...f_rd_i=1065836

Amazon is offering free shipping on Samsung HDTV's. The free shipping, no sales tax (for states that have that) and lower prices gives a price break of $450-$700 compared to best buy.

I just bought the Samsung LNT4665 for $1749 shipped compared to $2159 plus tax ($2311) at BB saving me $560.

    1) Killer prices on great TVs

    2) White Glove Delivery is handled by Eagle. I hate Eagle. Others have not had a problem.

    3) Did you see the stands they are recommending?!?!?! They cost more than the TV! I'll make this stand for anyone that wants one for $1,899!!!

While most are in stock, a couple of the TV's say "Usually ships in 1 to 2 months" Just in time for Valentine's Day or maybe St. Patrick's Day.

I plan on building a cabinet to go underneath to hold the DVD player and other components. The TV will be mounted to the wall with this stand:

I'll hide the wires inside the wall.

Never, ever buy wall mounts or HDMI cables from Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Their mark-ups are ridiculous. Go to monoprice instead:

Thanks for the link! The HDMI cable prices are very good, also. I've installed a half dozen wall-hung big screens and I'm always amazed at what my customers are charged for cables, mounts, etc.

The sales people tell their customers that the $40 cables are inferior to the $89 cables! HELLO! It's digital. The signal is either there or it isn't. The quality can't compromised.

They are using the same tactics that were used for analog signals which was 90% bushwah as well.

I love it when the sales guy starts in on me. I spent 35 years in electronics as an EE. Usually, I just walk away. Sometimes, though, I send a nasty-gram to management. Don't know if it does any good, but it makes an old curmudgeon like me feel better.
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

Exactly! I cringe when I see the 6' HDMI Monster cable in Circuit City for $130...like the 6' digital cable is going to be the weak link in the system, rather than the hundreds of feet of coax cable running up to the cable box.

I've used the silver monoprice wall mount for a 42" plasma. It works great. It came with a bunch of different bolts and extension tubes for different tvs too.

Don't need a new boob tube. After it sat in a box for three years, I finally bought the adapter to hook up my old Christmas gift, dvd player, to my video demodulator, just so I could watch some woodworking dvd's.

The more time in front of the tube, the less productive shop time, LOL.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Totally agree with you. its funny you mention that, but there are days that if i turn on the tv, i will sit in front of even if its just crap, kind of just want to sit there and do nothing. so to avoid this, i dont turn it on. LOML reminds of this when there are things that need my attention!

Taking a left turn from the current direction of this thread, three years ago I built an entertainment shelf (it's not really a 'center', per se). This family room was apparently an addition to the house so the brickwork of the chimney protrudes into the room right in the center of the wall leaving a recess on each side. So, one side is the TV and accessory shelves ane the other is where the wife's scrapping disk extends into the other recess. OK, this is getting too long - apologies. The point is that the new generation of TVs are so wide that even the opening for my current 35" TV won't accept a decent HDTV and I have nowhere to go with an upgrade. What the heck do I do now? Actually, I'm pretty frugal so I'll just sit in front of the old (3yrs) TV until pent up frustration or electronic malfunction takes over.

Thanks for allowing a rant to vent my consternation!
                      Blessings,
                      Chiz
