Makita 2012NB 12" Planer - $297 +shipping

I have not been watching this planer for awhile so this may not be a 'new' deal but this is a heck of lot less than I paid for this planer and a lot less than just about anybody else is selling this one for. The Makita planer always seems to get a premium in its class based on its quality. I own one and am very happy with it and would only replace it if I someday get a big 3 or 5hp unit. Anyway, the deal looks good although the shipping does spoil it a bit.

Not bad price but once you include shipping at another $69.00 I think I'd go with the Ridgid for $349.00 or Delta plus you get the stand with the Ridgid. The Ridgid also appears to be the better machine overall too.

This machine routinely is rated as better than the Ridgid. Don't get me wrong I think the Ridgid is a fine deal, but the Makita is supposed to give better results.

I don't know Jeff according to Wood magazine Issue 173 dated Nov 2006 they picked the Ridgid over the Makita. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Makita and have plenty of their tools but if this article is correct the Makita isn't all that great compared to the Ridgid, DeWalt 734, 735, Jet JWP13DX and Delta 22-580 in regards to snipe. It does beat the Delta TP305, Grizzly G0505 and Ryobi AP1301 however but that's not saying much as these last 3 don't have cutterhead locks so basically this Makita is rated 6 out of the 9 tested in regards to snipe or last if rating the machines with the cutterhead lock feature. So I stick to my guns that this isn't at least IMO the machine to buy for that price. Course that's assuming you can pick the Ridgid up locally and save shipping. I'll just mention the other 3 negative things they found in case somebody is interested in knowing. 1. Crude material removal "Gauge " lacks s scale to show cutting depth. 2. Odd size port (3") on optional dust hood ($30.00) requires adaptation to fit either a 2 1/2" vacuum hose or 4"dust collection hose. 3. Thickness stop can be set at any height but it lacks the reliable repeatability of dedicated thickness stops. Now I don't own a planer but am very close to buying one so I have been reading up on them and so this is not a personal recommendation by any means just repeating a magazine.

I just tested by new Delta 22-580. Awesome products. Absolutely no snipe out of the box. I tested pine. not sure how other wood will do. But I am very very happy with the purchase.

As I stated I think the Ridgid is a good value. I had it prior to getting 15" planer and thought it was a fine planer. I have heard a lot of very good things about the Makita, though I have never used it. Folks may be better off with the Ridgid given the warrenty, etc.
