I just picked one up for $340 after adding on the 15% off coupon I got in my HF mailer a few weeks ago.
Now I know what you are thinking.. A HF tool Chest must be a POS.
I thought the same thing till I saw one and started looking around for the few reviews I could find. They were all good. mostly by pro mechanics in need of a large box but couldn't take the mac/snap-on prices.
I've been looking for a new tool cabinet for a few months.. My old Craftsman 5 drawer 27" base cabinet model #65787 (cheep $120 model) is overloaded big time. The bottom 2 drawers are off their slides. My loving wife said I could go pick out a new box as an early father day gift. Horray for Wifey!
We had been looking at the Craftsman boxes at Sears and the Kobalt at lowes (hey it's the same box!) both made by Waterloo.
They were OK.. I'd wanted a 40" cabinet but didn't like the $700 price..
I could have picked up a 27" triple stack but I'd have no way to expand it later on when I have even more tools.
Just for fun we headed over to HF to check out what they had..
I was supprised to find a 40" base cabinet for $400. The steel is thicker than the Sears units.. smooth ball bearing slides, drawer liners and a rubber mat for the top.
The only down side I could see was the flat paint finish. (no glossy here)
So I started comparing it to the Sears 40" base model #61963
Sears lists it's cabinet at 198 pounds empty with an 800# load capacity
40"h x 41w x 18d
4.5" castors, 2 locking
The HF Cabinet is 398 pounds (it's a heavy beast)
1600# load capacity on the base alone.. 2850# with the top and side boxes added on.
5" rubber lined castors, 2 locking.. all with zerks for greasing the axles.
It will fit in the back of a Suburban of you remove the 3rd row and put the box on it's back.
Bring a friend.. it's heavy!!
I have the HF box in my garage now.. It's one solid piece of work.. My old craftsman roller cabinet is a toybox compared to it.
It came well packaged.. It comes in a box on a palate.
It's supported on the palate by blocks.. not the wheels so the casters won't see any abuse by a hard drop from a forklift driver.
Inside the box it's surrounded by 1/4" foam and heavy cardboard corner pads.
under all that it's sealed top to bottom in a big plastic bag. heck even the casters have their own little baggies with silica packs inside.
After it's off the palate the only thing you need to do is bolt on the push handle and slide in the drawer labels.
Oh yeah.. the lock works smoothly and locks every drawer.
The top box is an extra $299 and the side box is $199
I didn't get those yet. maybe next year.
There is conflicting information on the HF web site..
the red model is listed at 283lbs.. black at 400lbs..
This sucker is 400 pounds..
the black model lists the capacity at 450 pounds..
the manual lists the capacity at 1600lbs
