Critter on sale
The Critter spray gun is on sale for $39.99 at Amazon with free shipping. That is the best deal I have ever seen on it. I was having the same debate with the conversion gun but the cleanup issue made the choice for me.I had it on my list as being cheapest at Hartville Hardware over Lee Valley and Rockler but perhaps I skipped Amazon. Yup, that's what I paid a few months ago. I have only used it once, so I don't have a bunch of experience with it yet. I tried using with some stain and it didn't go so well, I do have some painting I was going to try it with this weekend, so we will see.

ditto here, i've had it for about 6 months. used for paint only so far. pretty cool for small objects, i hope your doors aren't full size room doors. the critter throws a pretty small paint pattern. for smaller items it's great, you can throw on a quick coat, rinse it out in the sink, and your done if 5 minutes. for a big project, i think rolling or a brush would be faster, even with cleanup.
while you're waiting for it to get here, you can go to thrift stores and try and find the 16oz canning jars. a 12 pack will run you about 7 bucks at retail, but you can find them for 10-15 cents a piece at second hand shops. a 12 pack of lids and rings will run you about 3 bucks at retail.

Other than the mason jar to store paint and ease clean-up, why not just get a $20 spray gun from HF? I'd like to do a bit of latex painting and am curious.

Like gjat, I'm wondering when the Critter might be the tool of choice. I have a couple projects that I thought it might help with.
One, using semi-gloss latex acrylic to paint white the narrow frames of some sliding closet doors, then to paint chocolate the inner portions of the doors after masking the frames. These are 3'x8' doors that I've painted with pads in the past, finding it hard not to clog the corner of frame and panel with one color or the other, and hard not to achieve really level paint even with Flotrol added.
The second is painting some kitchen cabinet doors and face frames. The doors would be done outdoors, but the face frames would be done in place, and I'm concerned about overspray.- David

I am no finishing expert, but IMHO the biggest differences I see are,
the HVLP will leave a nicer finish
the HVLP has MUCH less overspray
the cricket will spray latex paint easier (just too thick for an hvlp, but can be done)
the cricket is much easier to clean.
So if you want to paint something like shutters with latex paint, use a cricket, if you are going to spray lacquers and stuff you need a very nice finish, use the HVLP.
