Got an E-mail from - Woodcraft Jet Mini Lathe $199 with free shipping - any comments or suggestions ?? would this be a suitable lathe for bowl turning it has 10" swing over bed.

I had gotten a noname brand from rockler for XMAS (159.99) but this deal was too good to pass up (rockler is going back) ... the jet usually runs $299 but now 199 with FREE shipping. Called and ordered

Live in CA and no sales tax!! therefore for extra $20 brand name plus no fiddling with belts to change speed!

I just ordered one also - I don't think this is the variable speed model that the link shows that one was $399 but if it is it is really a deal

There's a thread over on woodnet about this deal. It's for the older (current?) non variable speed model that still uses pulleys to change speed. The newer 'i' model (which from what I can see adds indexing and a locking stock) is going for $199 on amazon and is supposed to ship in a month or so. For the same price, I decided to place an order for the newer version.

In addition to the 'i' version, there's also a 1220 version coming out which adds a 3/4 hp motor, a 12" swing and a lamp. See if the prices of the 1014 come down when these come out.

I got my order confirmation from Woodstock and it says "Jet mini lathe with w/index head", its backordered 'till feb 1st. Maybe I got lucky. I've been dealing with pulleys so ong it's hardly an issue. BTW whats an indexing head.
