7" Vise -- $34.99 at Rockler, Free Shipping

Not a bad vise for that price. I have one and it works just fine for my needs, solid. The only drawback is no quick release.

Sale ends tomorrow or when they run out. With free shipping, not a bad deal at all.

Steve, looks like a good vise for that price for sure, no quick release
but that ain't necessary but is a nice feature though. One other thing
would make it even better, a pop up dog so that you could wedge boards
between the vise and other hold downs in the bench for for hand planing,
or what eever you need to do. eezklock

I have too many vises already else I would pick one up. I am finishing up my shoulder vise and after that I hope I won't have to install another vise for a long time.

I agree -- it needs that pop-up dog. But I used this one for my face vise so I really didn't need it there. I bought one with the quick release and the pop up dog for the tail vise.

I guess the other vise I bought wasn't the greatest -- it's solid but the dog was plastic. It broke the first time I used it. I used it as a template and made a new one out of maple.

Steve, I too have a vise without those features, but I did make a pop-up-dog
and installed it on the vise and I wouldn't be without it. If, I buy a larger vise in the future it will have that and a quick release feature on it before I would consider buying another one. The pop-up-dog I made is made from a piece of alunimum bar stock I had lying around the shop, hey, it works! eezlock

You can get a 7"vice with steel dog and quick release from Enco for $36.45. No free shipping though.

You can add a pop-up dog to this vise too if you want. Make a thick front jaw wooden face and stick a pop-up dog in it. It will reduce the opening but this vise has 8" opening, so you should have 6" left after you add both wooden faces. See posts by Tom MIller here - he did a nice work with fancy wood on the face.

A 1" wooden face with hoes drilled for a hardwood dowel or a dado that will let you put a piece of hardwood or bar stock makes a great substitute for a pop up dog.
