A long while ago, got me a no-name set at R&S Strauss, for like $15. Has the ratchet, an assortment of sockets, a magnetic screwdriver with all sorts of flat, phillips, hex and square bits for it (including an adapter for smaller sockets), two pair pliers, several open end/box wrenches, a bunch allen wrenches, and a feeler gauge set. Seen a lot of use and still in great shape...

Back when I was in college, and didn't have squat for tools, I got a couple of sets of GN wrenches. I still have them after all these years of abuse, and they reside on my truck box. Sure, I've replaced them with "better" tools; but I never bent or broke one of them, and they got me out of many a fix.

Bought a cheap set of sockets from Wards a long time

ago (early 80s). Had the chrome peel off on one of them while using it and
cut my finger. Since then I stay away from cheapies.....
