    Rockler is mostly bait

I haven't stepped foot in a Rockler for a long while. I got sick of the come-ons when they never had any stock to back up the ads they sent out. Waste of time and money. They send out thousands of flyers and it turns out they have ONE of the item that most people went there for.

Just so people that have never visited on don't get the idea that EVERY Rockler is like you describe, I gotta say our Milwaukee Rockler and our Milwaukee Woodcraft are terrific, and I feel lucky to have them. Their prices are retail, but they have stock and they try being helpful (and usually succeed). I support them whenever I can.

There are two rocklers that I know of in the greater Los Angeles area and one of them has always been very helpful. The other one not so helpful. I remember I was standing in line to make a purchase once and the cashier had finished ringing up in the guy in front of me. They were chatting about a project or something of the other after the purchase was completed. Well knowing I was standing in line waiting to be rung up they continued to chat for about 10 or more minutes while I stood there waiting. Pretty annoying if you ask me. Come to think of it this has happened to me at both locations. I try not to go to rockler unless I absolutely need something from them.

I visit 2 of the Twin Cities Rocklers regularly. They are quite different in some respects (mostly because the Minnetonka Rockler is rather small and hence crammed), but the folks at both locations are very friendly and helpful. Prices are all over the board. For example last I checked they had some of the better prices for Sorby turning tools, even compared to online-only places. Wood seems expensive, gizmos and jigs very expensive. They have the best hardware sortiment locally, sometimes priced below box store prices (at least on the few items a box store might carry), and actually seing something when improvising or trying to come up with designs is worth a lot. All in all I am very glad we have them.

Too bad you had bad experience with Rockler. I'm lucky to have local Rockler and Woodcraft. Rockler is small store and the employees are very friendly, professionals and helpful. Unlike HD/Lowes, you don't have to wait or look for someone to help you.

I don't buy big ticker items at these stores because you can find better deals at Amazon or somewhere else. But no one (hd, lowes etc) else carries stuff they have including lumber.

Recently I was at store looking for a stain. One of the employee found one that matching and opened the can, applied on the scrap hardwood to show how it will come out. I don't think you can get this kind of help at HD or Lowes.

I can quote lot of examples. Try them again...

You guys are all lucky. I live in Philadelphia, still the fifth biggest city in the country. The closest Woodcraft store is 50 miles away. The closest Rockler store is 300 miles away.

Off the subject, but I can really identify with the guy who was complaining about waiting in line while the person ahead was having a long conversation. This happens to me in the bank all the time. Americans are known for not having patience, and that goes for me too. The customer having the conversation thinks of himself as a real friendly guy, and the clerk thinks of himself as polite, and if I speak up, I am the grumpy one. But in reality, the customer is rude and inconsiderate, and the clerk is not doing his job. Don't get me started.
