Finally got the 24 pack trial kit someone mentioned here months ago. They are smaller than a ketchup pack but I will make a nice sample board with lyptus so I should always be able to find the perfect color.

Lowes now carries the Minwax & Olymic stuff in the same packs. 39 cents each. They came in handy recently for trying out the various stains on sample project wood.

Any idea how much surface area each packet ($0.39) may cover, say for lyptus.

Well very little. Figure maybe 6-8 square inches? It's like taking a packet of soy sauce and spreading it around. Easy to make a big mess with these I've found.
