How can I find "special prices" at Sears? (or HD?)

Some of you contributors post items that will show $123 (or whatever) at the cash register even though the price shown is $234 (or whatever). The salesman doesn't know about it. THANK YOU for sharing the info! [I recently benefited on the 6 1/8 jointer - How could it be only $105? - WOW]

But I wonder how do you find out about these deals originally? Or are all the instances just discovery by pure luck and then spread the news in a spirit of fantastic good-will?

I can not speak for others but I try and get on mailing lists. I get the Craftsman Club email and Harbor Freight also Woodcrafters, Rockler, Amazon and several others.

I you do as John suggests and also watch a few of the BB's like this one, there won't be very many of these deals that will get by you. When you see someone mention a deal, go to that site and see if they offer a regular email type newsletter. If they do, sign up for it. Before you know it you'll be getting more emails then you have time to read.

One tip regarding Sears is that prices ending in .97 indicate national clearance items and prices ending in .93 are local store manager's clearance items (according to a Sears associate on one of the deal forums)

Other stores may use similar prices to indicate clearance items. I think that Costco uses .97 for example.

Any item that ends in 7 is a clearance at Costco's, any item that ends in 1 is a clearance item at SamsClub.

At Lowes, you can look for an "N" on a yellow price tag. A manager told me that such labeling means that the price is negotiable. Usually this is final clearance merchandise. I don't know if this applies at all of their stores or not.
