Is it worth looking for a local retailer other than the big box stores to buy MDF or are the prices okay. I know the big box stores are a rip off for wood in general but was wondering how much could i possibly save if i bought mdf elsewhere. Thanks!
Where's a good place to buy mdf

HD has smaller sheets as well. I have never seen anything smaller than 4X8 at Lowes. If you don't need the full size you pay a hair more but its a lot easier to handle.YOU DONT HAVE TO TRAIN TO BE MISERABLE. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN TO ENDURE MISERY.Comment

I usualy have the BORG cut my MDF in half so I can get it on my car. Most of the time they don't even charge me for the cuts.Originally posted by onedashHD has smaller sheets as well. HD has 2x4 sheets of 1/2 and 1/4, and 4x8 sheets of 3/4
The prices arn't really bad at all. That's where I get mine when I use MDF, which isn't all that often. Mostly for templates.Keith Z. Leonard

Yep! Definitely! I have yet to be charged for a cut, too.Originally posted by BobSchI usualy have the BORG cut my MDF in half so I can get it on my car. Most of the time they don't even charge me for the cuts.
One of these days, though, I'm going to pick up some different thicknesses at my hardwood lumberyard. They have 1" and 1/4", which I've never seen at HD.

The first 2 cuts at the BORG are free. I've had them do 3 cuts before, and they havn't charged me for the extra cut. Yeah, the hardwood prices there are insane.Keith Z. Leonard

As is the hardwood itself.Originally posted by drumpriestYeah, the hardwood prices there are insane.
Luckily there's so little to choose from (even within the small # of species they carry), that most people are pretty quick to look elsewhere.

speaking of MDF cuts
My local BORGs (N. Santa Ana/Tustin, CA) no longer cut MDF. Signs are now clearly posted by the saws. Probably worthwhile to ask before loading up the cart. I was at two locations yesterday and there was a whole list of things they no longer cut. One associate says the policy has been posted for about a month.Last edited by perpetualapprentice; 03-10-2006, 04:55 AM.Comment

Prabably has to due with the amount of "fine" sawdust that is generated when you cut MDF.Originally posted by DonHoI just bought a sheet of 3/4" MDF at HD in Midwest City, Okla and they cut it for me. I'd bet the rules against cutting some things are for California only and dictated by state rules.
